Starting 27 July 2026, Kruisherenhotel Maastricht will temporarily pause operations to undergo a comprehensive renovation. This marks a significant evolution for the property, extending beyond a standard guestroom refresh to encompass a complete reimagining of the historic inner courtyard and cloister garden. The intention is to deliver an elevated, contemporary expression of luxury where heritage, architecture and nature seamlessly align.

Located within a 15th-century former monastery and monumental Gothic church, the five-star hotel is internationally recognised for its striking juxtaposition of historical grandeur and stylish design.
With this thoughtful renovation, Oostwegel Collection acts as the dedicated guardian of the property’s future, carefully balancing historical stewardship with modern progression. Each accommodation will be thoughtfully redesigned to meet the evolving requirements of today’s traveller, prioritising premium comfort and a refined aesthetic. The updated interiors will respect the architectural legacy of the building while introducing smart-room technology and the finest contemporary materials.
Just as the hotel has always been celebrated for the dialogue between old and new, the redesigned guestrooms will continue this philosophy. Guests can expect a stay that is both inspiring and comfortable, in a place where history remains tangible and forward design enriches every moment.
A new green oasis in the heart of Maastricht
A highlight of the project is the transformation of the inner courtyard and cloister garden to create a sanctuary where nature and heritage align. To realise this vision, Oostwegel Collection is collaborating with internationally acclaimed landscape designer, Piet Oudolf, celebrated for his pioneering work on iconic global projects, including New York’s High Line. Working alongside him will be his long-term creative partner, landscape designer, Tom de Witte.
Abandoning traditional hotel landscaping in favour of a dynamic, naturalistic approach, Oudolf and de Witte are engineering a living ecosystem crafted for year-round biodiversity. The design serves a dual purpose, providing an oasis of tranquillity for guests and actively contributing to the environmental rejuvenation of Maastricht’s historic city centre.
Owner and Managing Director of Oostwegel Collection, Camille Oostwegel, described the project as, "Creating a space where history, art and nature actively enhance one another. The new garden will not only inspire our guests but also represents a tangible contribution to the greening of Maastricht’s urban core."

Project timeline and practical information
To ensure the renovation meets the highest standards of safety and craftsmanship, the hotel will temporarily close its doors from 27 July 2026 and commence a structured, phased reopening in the autumn.
In October 2026, the first renovated guestrooms will be introduced, and Spencer’s Restaurant & Bar will reopen to resume full dining operations. The project is due to be completed in December 2026, when the final phase of guestrooms and suites will be unveiled.
