The Old Rectory

Formerly a vicarage for the St Gerlach priest, the Old Rectory sits in the pretty village of Houthem-St Gerlach, within the Geul Valley of South Limburg. Built in the 1870s from original marlstone, the property includes five bedrooms, with 10 beds, and can accommodate up to ten people. Equipped with spacious living and dining rooms, as well as a kitchen, it also has a southwest facing terrace and outdoor pool. Privacy is assured from the garden that is ringed by the presbytery’s original boundary wall.

Just across the road sits Château St. Gerlach where guests can enjoy the many facilities and dining options available. There are also some interesting walking routes around the Geul Valley that can be accessed via the estate. The Old Rectory is available for weekly rental, as well as weekend and midweek stays.

The history of the Old Rectory

By 1874 the Old Rectory of Houthem, which was rented from the municipality, had fallen into disrepair. The parish decided to build a new one in Onderstestraat 18 on the site of a blacksmith’s foundry, which was subsequently demolished. Between 1875 and 76, master carpenter, Jan Brouns from Houthem was tasked with building the new vicarage.

The inscription above the door reads: “FabrICa DIVI GerLaCI Me ConstrUXIt”, which translates as a reminder of the year of construction by the Gerlachus church.

Towards the end of the 1990s, as the restoration of Château St. Gerlach got underway, the parish priest was rehoused next to the chapel. This led to the property at Onderstestraat 18 losing its official function as the Houthem vicarage.

The Old Rectory tour

Stepping inside the historic Old Rectory, guests will discover a hallway graced by a beautiful chandelier and original staircase. Located to the left is the sizable living room, which leads through to the dining area, with plenty of space for large gatherings. This room opens out onto the southwest facing terrace and outdoor swimming pool (can be used from May to September), overlooking the private walled garden. On the ground floor sits the open-plan kitchen with modern appliances and separate TV room. There is complimentary WiFi throughout the property.
Three bedrooms are located on the first floor, each with en-suite bathroom furnished with shower, double wash basin and toilet. The rooms that occupy the front of the rectory benefit from the stunning views across the Geul Valley.

Located on the second floor are two spacious bedrooms, one with double bed (made up of twin beds) and the other has a single bed. The large, shared bathroom comes with shower, bath, double wash basin and toilet.
