Festive opening of suites at Château Neercanne

Most extraordinary suites in the Netherlands officially opened on World Heritage Day

On World Heritage Day, Thursday, April 18, Oostwegel Collection opened the seven new, special suites at Château Neercanne. The festive opening, which simultaneously celebrated the completion of the Château’s restoration work, took place in the presence of the Mayor of Maastricht, Wim Hillenaar, and guest of honor Humberto Tan . They signed a plaque together with owner and general manager Camille Oostwegel to mark this special moment.

Work on Château Neercanne began in May 2023: the Château’s slate roofs were in need of maintenance. This moment was seized to realize seven luxury suites in the Gate Building. At the same time, a sustainability move was made there: this building, which also houses restaurant L’Auberge, is completely off gas. Camille Oostwegel is proud of the result and happy to now share the suites with national and international guests. “We have been looking forward to this moment for a long time. The addition of the suites makes Château Neercanne a unique place in the Netherlands. The combination of the design, historic location and top-level gastronomy makes it the most special suites in our country. I am also proud that with the restoration and preservation we have made the Château ready for the future. We are leaving this magnificent monument even better, more beautiful and more enjoyable for future generations.”

The mayor of Maastricht emphasized Château Neercanne’s important role in the region and expressed his appreciation for the work that has taken place on the castle over the past year. “Our region has beautiful castles and monumental farms, but they don’t just stay standing. It takes passion and craftsmanship to preserve these national monuments. Oostwegel Collection can do this like no other, putting Maastricht and Limburg on the international map. This gives the family business an enormously important significance for the city and our region. The list of guests of honor in Oostwegel Collection’s hotels is already extensive, but with the suites at Château Neercanne it will undoubtedly grow even longer.”

Meaningful luxury

One of the first guests of honor at Château Neercanne was Humberto Tan. During the opening, he expressed his appreciation for the entrepreneurship of the Oostwegel family, and reflected on the unique sense of hospitality the team gives him with every visit. For Pierre Haenen, Director/Host of Château Neercanne, the opening marks the conclusion of an important period for the terraced castle. “When I started as director here five years ago, we were only a restaurant, with only initial plans for expansion to hotel. I am proud of my team that has worked hard in recent years to make Château Neercanne a place where guests experience meaningful luxury and where all the senses are stimulated. Our guests can now stay overnight in the finest suites in the Netherlands after dining at the Michelin-starred Restaurant Château Neercanne or the Michelin Bib Gourmand award-winning L’Auberge, giving them an unforgettable experience.”
